First Issue of Flint Hills Heritage Newsletter Released

In its continued efforts to protect and promote the Kansas Flint Hills and the tallgrass prairie, the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition and the Flint Hills Heritage Task Force recently issued the first-ever edition of the Flint Hills Heritage Newsletter.

This quarterly, electronic newsletter is designed to share information on the unique history and culture of the Kansas Flint Hills and ways many residents of the region are using heritage tourism to stimulate local economies with a view towards preserving the local landscape.

“This newsletter represents the next step taken by the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition to educate both local residents and the general public to the importance of preservation of the distinctive Kansas Flint Hills landscape and heritage through careful tourism promotion,” said Dr. William Smith, business professor at Emporia State University and chairman of the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition. “Heritage tourism in the region means low impact on the landscape but big gains for local economies. The stories in the newsletter are excellent examples of what can be done for the long-term benefit of the 22-counties of the Kansas Flint Hills.”

The first edition of the newsletter, which is issued free of charge by e-mail in digital format, features articles on the Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race, which will pass through Council Grove on Sept. 11-12; the first Flint Hills Heritage Conference, which will be held in Cottonwood Falls on Oct. 19; and a report on the recent Symphony in the Flint Hills, which was held in Wabaunsee County in June.

Other articles cover subjects like Wah-Shun-Gah Days in Council Grove, the Flint Hills Overland Wagon Train, the Walnut Valley Festival, and an article on tourism and Flint Hills preservation.

The initial release of the newsletter went to over 200 subscribers, many of whom signed up for the newsletter during the ongoing traveling exhibit of Jim Richardson’s Flint Hills photos, which were featured in an article in the April edition of National Geographic.

A copy of the newsletter can be downloaded at the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition’s Web site, www.KansasFlintHills.travel. Those wishing to subscribe to the free newsletter by e-mail can submit their request online at the Coalition’s Web site. That Web site also features the upcoming schedule of the traveling exhibit of Richadson’s photos.
